When faced with a choice of alternative healing therapies, how does one decide which therapy to take?

The BBC recently aired a programme taking a look at hypnotherapy. What emerged was an "investigation" by it's presenter to see if she could be hypnotised. The science behind the state of hypnosis was also looked at and there were some cringe worthy moments of poorly trained and old fashioned hypnotherapists in "action".
